Look for fun, inexpensive items to mix and match that accentuate what you already own, suggests Wendy Wyne, owner of FĂȘte Studio fetestudio.com in Richmond, a full-service event planning and design studio.

She illustrates that approach on these pages.
Mix traditional decorations on hand with creative ideas to make an entryway stand out. Lighted garland (Pottery Barn, $69.00 for 5 feet) creates a dramatic entrance. Glass hurricanes are great to use all year. Change filler (Garden Ridge, $3.99) according to the occasion.

Pair gold-colored reindeer (Michael’s, $8.99 each) with a red runner (Pottery Barn, $49) to play up common holiday colors. “You can embellish more with Christmas decorations,” Wendy says. “Take any inspiration and put in your own style and flavor.”
Symmetrical pieces create a clean setting. “You probably already have candlesticks and a tablecloth to use,” Wendy says. “They’re inexpensive and you can use the same table setting again for another dinner party.”

Fill dishes (Pottery Barn, $14.99 each) with sweets for festive nods to the season.

Spray paint an inexpensive wreath gold to add glamour to a door adornment.

Arrange different candlesticks (Pottery Barn, $24-$59) of the same color to give the entry table texture and a new look.

Pine cones (Garden Ridge, $3.99) enhance the lighted garland (Pottery Barn, $69 for 5 feet) to add an earthy feel to a traditional arrangement. “Christmas doesn’t have to be a literal interpretation,” Wendy says. “Add anything that reflects your personality. Personality is what makes any design good.”

Pull out china that’s been stored away (Lenox, $99 for 4-piece set if you want to buy new) to add detail or a theme to the table.

Silver makes the casual display slightly more formal – “It polishes the look,” Wendy says – and may be used year-round.
